A fee, or commission charged by a bookmaker for handling a wager. A bookmaker will attempt to set odds or point spread to split the betting between outcomes equally in order to balance the book of wagers in order to avoid taking on risk on any propositions. As a result the bookmaker is paid for their role via a commission. In practice, bookmakers large and small may run an unbalanced book either as wager of for marketing purpose, such as heavy betting for local favorite or national team.
