Casino Term: Roulette

A casino game that uses a wheel spining around a verticle axis and ivory or metal ball to determine the outcome of players bets. After bets are completed the ball is rolled in the opposite direction of the spinning wheel, along the sides of the wheel housing just above the spinning wheel. As the ball loses momentum and falls onto the spinning wheel, the outcome of all bets on the table are determine by where the ball comes to rest.  Typical roulette wheels will have 37 or 38 numbers, each with a slot to catch the metal ball as it drops from its roll. American style roulette tables feature a wheel with 37 numbers from 0 to 36, with the 0 spot colored green or the remaining numbers are colored either red or black with an equal number of odd and even numbers in each color.  The French or European version features a 0 and 00 spot, both colored green, otherwise the game is played the same.

A roulette game features a felted table with a round wheel and it's housing on one end of the table and grid like layout of each indidivual number in numerical order with it's color as the background.  The lines of the grid are used to allow betting on multiple bets, each with 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 or 12 numbers, red/black, odd/even and any row or column. Stacked at the base of the wheel are non-denominated chips grouped by color, each new player receives their own color when they buy into the table. The player will also set the value of his chips, within the house limits of that table.  Once the player is given their color, they must bet a minimum number of chips on each roll, often 5 or 10 chips, one or more spots on the table.  When the ball comes to rest, the dealer calls the Number, it's Color and whether it's Odd or Even, identifying the most popular bet.  it is possible for a player to have place a bet on an individual number, a color and odd/even and will all bets at once.
