A person, shop, or organization engaged in accepting or booking, bets on sporting or other events. Bookmakers can be either legal and licensed or illegal, can operate from a shop, over the phone, on the Internet or even face to face on the street. Bookmaking is illegal throughout the United States, with the exception of the state of Nevada, which licenses sportsbooks are part of their regulated gaming industry. Bookmaking is regulated, but widespread in the United Kingdom where companies including Ladbrokes, William Hill, Coral Bet and others own thousands of shops. Other European Countries, Japan and Canada have some form of state controlled sports betting, that is often run as part of the state lottery system.
